Ladies, grab your tools!

To celebrate the recent International Women’s Day, we’re looking at DIY jobs in your bathroom that handy women everywhere can get to grips with. The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in your home and if you’ve been visualising your dream bathroom, here are some quick and easy ways to turn that dream into a reality. So, grab your Wonder Woman tool belt and let’s get cracking:

Re-grouting your tiles

Discoloured grout can really let down the appearance of an otherwise stylish bathroom. It can make even the cleanest of rooms look grubby, so you might want to get to grips with re-grouting and refreshing your bathroom as part of your Spring clean.

You’ll need a waterproof adhesive and a scraping tool for removing the old grout from between the tiles. Give the whole area a good wipe and then apply the new grout in the paths between the tiles. Any excess can be removed with a fingertip. Wipe down with a damp cloth when you’re done, and your bathroom will instantly look brighter and cleaner.

Fix a dripping tap

This problem is most likely caused by a worn-out rubber washer. Replacing a washer is cheap and straightforward, you just need access to the right tools and be sure to turn off the water supply at the stop cock before you begin. You’ll need an adjustable spanner and a screwdriver. There are loads of online tutorials, so just take it slowly and remember to turn the water supply off first!

Replace a toilet seat

Whether it’s for comfort or aesthetics, a new toilet seat goes a long way to improving the look of your bathroom. Depending on the position of your toilet, this task can prove a bit awkward but with just a couple of tools and some willpower, this is a job you can do yourself. If you’ve never attempted it before, there are plenty of online guides and all new toilet seats come with instructions on fitting. There are so many to choose from too, depending on whether you fancy padded, glittery, plastic, wood, slow-closing, patterned or brightly coloured. Take a look at our range of bathroom suites NI.

Oiling a squeaky door

Not a major problem but an annoying one you might have been living with for far too long. You simply need to oil the hinges. Whilst there are products specifically designed for this purpose, things you already have around the home will do the job just as well. A bit of hand soap, some cooking oil or a spray of lubricant on the hinge pins is required.

Remove the hinge pins from the frame using a hammer and a big nail to tap them out. Give each one a good wipe with a damp cloth and then cover the pin in oil or soap. Replace the hinge and enjoy silent doors again.

Painting a wall

You can transform a room with a simple fresh coat of paint in just one weekend. This won’t cost the earth either as bathroom walls tend not to be the biggest in the house. Choose your desired colour and invest in a couple of good quality brushes for the best possible finish. Remember to prepare your wall surface before you start painting and lay plenty of covers over flooring and furniture to prevent mess.
