It is important to keep children stimulated and engaged. Bath time provides the ideal opportunity to combine playtime with the chore of washing your kids.  Nothing will keep your child stimulated like a splash of colour in your bathroom.  While traditionally adults see a monochrome bathroom as elegant and stylish, children can see it as boring. Therefore, when designing your child’s bathroom, try to bring in a sense of playfulness and excitement. Introduce a specific theme or exciting colours to create a fun, stimulating bathroom theme that your little ones will simply love.

Bright colours are good, therefore team them with trendy wall murals and your kids will love going to the bathroom.  Adding bright colours and patterns to your bathroom will make it more appealing and a fun space to be for little ones. Ways to add colour can include, with a lick of paint, bright towels and accessories, all of which are easy and quick to change as your child gets older. Safety

With any bathroom design, safety is of utmost paramount, however, even more so when considering children.

Choosing the right bathroom storage is critical to child safety.  Avoid clutter by providing sufficient storage space, allowing you to store away toys and general bathroom products. Use a wall cabinet above the sink to allow you to keep belongings potentially harmful to children out of their reach.  Child-proof magnetic locks are ideal for storing bathroom cleaning products such as bleach and toilet cleaner in your bathroom furniture.

Sharp edges should also be avoided when possible. Opt for more rounded sanitaryware products to minimise injury. Rounded designs add great character and fit well in a more fun themed design. All taps and showers in child-friendly bathrooms should have thermostatic controls to regulate the water temperature, this ensures water never reaches dangerous temperatures. These are easily installed and can help prevent inquisitive children from receiving nasty burns. Installing mixer taps reduces risk of scalding from hot water by ensuring you turn on the cold water first.

Wet floors are dangerous in any bathroom, so it is important to minimise splashing in the bath, no matter how much they enjoy it! A corner bath can offer plenty of space and depth, allowing you to keep the splash-zone minimised to one corner of the room. The water can then easily be mopped up with towels to prevent any slips and falls on wet tiles or flooring. Shower baths also offer a great solution, utilising the glass enclosure to keep splashing to a minimum.

Functionality

There are many things to consider when planning a kids bathroom to ensure it caters to your children’s needs. Kids can be rough and the bathroom can easily get messy, so we recommend durable materials that can handle spills, splashes and stains. Scratch resistant surfaces, washable walls, and hard-wearing tiles are all superb options for a kid friendly bathroom. When it comes to paint, opt for something Dulux Endurance + Matt, which can be wiped clean without actually removing the colour.  Other alternatives include Multipanel as an alternative to tiling, which is both easily installed and comes in a variety of colours, themes and styles.

There are many stylish and practical bathroom storage solutions available, such as vanity units and cabinets so you can keep toiletries and clutter hidden away. Plan for different ages by adding side-by-side sinks, possibly at different heights to cater for young and older – a big time-saver in the morning and at bedtime.

Fun bathroom accessories

There are plenty of ways to personalise your bathroom for both you and your children. Finish off by adding colour with fun children’s bathroom accessories that can be easily changed over time. These include soap dishes, hooks, toothbrush holders and much, much more.

You could incorporate storage baskets and drawers to keep toys and personal items hidden away. If you have more than one child, you could allocate each of them a storage area so they can take pride in their own little space.
