7 Tips to having a great shower

10 Apr

Taking a refreshing shower is one of the great pleasures of life. However, are you doing it right? Yes, believe it or not, there are expert tips on perfect showering. So, grab your towel and let’s get started:

  1. Keep Cool

Taking a steamy hot shower might feel just the thing for tired, achy muscles but it dries out skin really quickly. Hot water removes moisture and natural oils from the skin. If you absolutely must have it hot, then just run it hot for a couple of minutes and then turn it down to lukewarm to help your skin. Does your shower need updating to make your time together special again?

  1. Make it Snappy

A shower should only last for around ten minutes to give the most benefit to your skin, according to dermatologists. Showering more than once a day will also seriously dry out your skin. You might think that water is moisturising but the more you soak, the more natural oils are lost.

  1. Lather once and rinse

Shampooing is usually the first stage of a shower and it makes sense to get that done first. You might have heard the advice, later, rinse and repeat but in truth there should be no repeating. This rule only applies to those suffering from excessively oily scalps. Nobody else needs to repeat the process.

  1. Replace your Loofah

For those of us with a loofah hanging in the shower, or a puff that’s been lying around for goodness knows how long – it’s time to bin it! They are actually a breeding ground for all manner of nasty bacteria. If you need something to wash with, try a washcloth as it’s easier to remember to put these in the wash with the towels.

  1. Don’t Overclean

This will be music to the ears of anyone who regularly oversleeps and ends up rushing their morning shower. It’s ok to take a shortcut and wash only those areas where sweat glands are highly active, such as the armpits, groin, under the breasts and the buttocks. Arms and legs don’t need lots of soapy bubbles as this will just strip them of essential oils.

  1. Plenty of Time?

If you have plenty of time for your shower, then why not consider using a pumice stone on your feet while you shower. The warm, moist atmosphere is perfect for loosening up dry skin, allowing you to remove the dead skin cells much easier

  1. Moisturise

Don’t leave it too long before slapping on the body cream. You can even apply it while still in the shower! Moisturiser works by trapping moisture in the skin so ideally you want to do this as soon as you’ve finished or at least within a few minutes of patting yourself dry. Keep the door closed and don’t turn on an overhead fan as you want to apply your lotion in that warm, moist room to get the utmost benefit for your skin.
